“They Stopped the Moving Sands”

In 1957, Frank Herbert was working on a magazine article about a grass that could take root in the desert sands, which could help stop the spread of deserts. He eventually made it into “Dune”. I made it into a song.

The sand’s stopped moving and has taken seed-
I thought that was all we were gonna need.
To paint the desert a grassy green
And see the future of all time unfurl.
We could have made the future of the world appear
But we are digging is grave I hear.
And the world just shrunk and made everything close
Now we’re closer to the end of the world

They stopped the moving sands
But we’re moving towards extinction
They stopped the moving sands
But will not stop pollution

And we have no idea – how far it reaches
Will the sun shine tommorrow on cobblestone beaches
Will the pope disabolish what the vatican preaches
And start printing money to cure diseases
And stop the shifting in the peace talks
Where all’s permitted and the criminal walks
If we don’t know what happens in the war
How can we know what peace is?

They stopped the moving sands
What did they do it for?
They stopped the moving sands
But they cannot stop the war.
